Cattle are generally seen as just food for us, but there are many more beneficial factors to cattle ranching than beef. Food waste and leftover fiber from ethanol production can be turned into nutrient feeds, often bought by ranchers and fed to their livestock. Besides the clean-up that livestock does to prevent overcrowding of waste in landfills, they also graze on land that is not suitable for crop production. In Florida, ranchers can store carbon in the dirt thanks to their cattle. Bahia grass, the common forage for cattle in Florida, stores carbon in its roots that extend deep into the earth's surface, thus keeping carbon out of the atmosphere and preventing global warming.
