Today cattle ranching is very different from the beginning of Texas cattle ranching. Once Texas was an established cattle state, cattle drives began. A cattle drive would consist of 1,000 to 2,500 head, but nowadays; cattle ranchers have to load their cattle into a trailer and drive a few hours to market, unlike in the old days when it would take months to get cattle to market. The original days of cattle ranching revolved around the younger generation, trail bosses were commonly 21-22 years old but today's cattle rancher is 58 years old on average.
